Exploring Graphite Artistry: Techniques and Inspirations

I’ve been working in graphite for the last couple of weeks, playing with line and values. Graphite is wonderfully suited to working out visual ideas without distraction.

These two pieces are quite small, but incorporate a lot of detail. The end result is not unlike my silverpoint work, probably due to my use of a very narrow gauge 0.3 lead on 140lb Arches hotpress paper. I’m really happy with how they turned out, and I think I’ll move to a larger sheet for the next ones.

In the meantime, I’m finishing up some illustration work. Next week I plan to start a watercolour for an upcoming Wow x Wow online show. I really enjoyed working on the last one. That will round out my show activity for 2025. Just a reminder that I have 2 pieces in the Benz Gallery Scared Stiff show and another in the Inverarity Gallery Goddess show. Please reach out to the respective galleries for details. If you are looking for something smaller, please visit my online shop. I was heartened that shipping to the US was not a fraught as I’d feared earlier in the month, so I recently added the US back into my ship to options.

This week I also found myself working on the expansion of a short story called, Scattered Ghosts. Reading through what I had in Scrivener, it seemed like there was more to tell. SG is a science fiction tale involving a man’s quest to earn his way home through certain illegal activities. We’ll see where it goes in the next few weeks!
