“Secret Affinities” is my first completed drawing of 2025. It tips the hat to a couple of my favourite artists—can you identify them? The idea for this picture came from a small sketch of a witch that I did a few years ago. In this image, I drew her with her with a prominent left hand (the other hand is hidden, or maybe non-existent). As a leftie, I am sensitive to the tradition of negative connotations in art and religion regarding the left hand. In this image, it is represented as a source of power, juxtaposed with the unicorn’s horn, a symbol of the divine power that nurtures all living things. The witch’s dress contains her ancestors, an idea that may have its roots in my multiple readings of Dune while I was illustrating it a couple of years ago. The small figure to the extreme right is a nod to the T-Rex album “The Slider”.
