The Beasting

On Friday, I took part in the Beasting, a live painting event held during the Kitchener-Waterloo Night Market. Each artist was assigned a body section—mine was the pelvis—and told to interpret it as as we wished. We were each given a 2′ x 2′ panel with the connections to the next panel marked in pencil. Over four hours we created our Beasts. At the end, they were attached to create the full figures. You can see the final result in the screen-grab below.

How did it go? I have to say, this event was a riot. Public painting is so hilariously outside my wheelhouse, I knew I had to do it. The other artists were amazingly talented and fun to hang with. The evening was warm, the music motivating thanks to a post-punk/ goth playlist, the air full of interesting snatches of conversation and street food. Honestly, I was just happy to be there as this was the first public art thing I’ve attended since covid. I may have been a little ambitious with what I want to achieve, but in the end I was fine with the result. Fun was had by all.

A huge thank you to Vincent Marcone of My Pet Skeleton for the invitation and to Eric Rumble for amazing organization, hospitality and a literal wagonload of halloween candy.
