I’ve been working on more ink and watercolour pieces over the past couple of weeks. Both of these new pieces were done with a dip pen on art board and then painted with water colours. The first is a clean line style. Explorers is fully cross hatched, which gives it the look of a vintage illustration. I think this approach compliments the subject matter. There is more to come in this series of works. In the meantime, these pieces are available in my shop.

With this piece I was thinking about the robots from my youth, Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet and B-9 from Lost in Space. I’m also currently writing a novella that features a robot. Biological elements often feature in my work, but they were especially front of mind while I was working on this piece from my reading of Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky—highly recommended if you haven’t read it.

As mentioned, with this piece I was going for a vintage look. I think this could be an illustration for a “lost” Jules Verne novel or maybe a graphic novel about Victorian explorers meeting an alien probe—ah the possibilities. I hope you enjoy these new works. Feel free to leave a comment.
