I am surfacing for a moment to announce some great news. If you follow my blog you will know that for the past few months I've been very focused on writing a new fantasy novel. I'm getting really close to finishing, which is exciting and incredibly rewarding creatively. But that's not the news. The news... Continue Reading →
Spreading Roots
Well, I should write something here before I gain the sad distinction of being the first man to be fired by his own blog. I have spent the last two months, give or take, writing my face off. What am I writing? It's a new novel, a cool, weird, trippy and exciting novel (IMHO) -... Continue Reading →
Oneiric Natural History
One of the joys of the year coming to a close is thinking about what will come in the next year. This is a time when I make a lot of lists; possible names of new drawings, ideas for images, books I want to read and things to research. Right now I am thinking of... Continue Reading →
Found Memory
I guess most artists must have a place where old sketches and ideas stratify over the years. Mine is known by the unremarkable designation of "the paper rack," which is actually an old library atlas stand. It is so overburdened that one day I expect it will fall through the floor into the basement. Yesterday... Continue Reading →
The Dark Bead – Work in Progress #4
I thought I'd share my progress to date on The Dark Seed. It took a bit of a back seat to Bells Call Others, but it's not unusual for me to have several drawing on the go at once. This strategy is necessary as pointillism is by its nature a slow technique. Having a few... Continue Reading →
The Green Demon (on sale)
The Green Demon is on sale in my webstore. Its a piece I did last year when I was doing a small series of demons. I am using the proceeds of these small sale pieces to publish a book of 5 short fantasy stories called Magpie's Ladder. - Richard.
Strangewood (Florestranha)
I had a nice time working on this painting last summer, so it is rewarding to see it in its finished form. The cover design looks great. I believe it comes out next month (March). The book also includes b/w interior illustrations.
A is for Alien
I just noticed that PS Publishing in the UK has listed Caitlin R. Kiernan's A is for Alien in their Forthcoming Books section. The cover design incorporates one of my drawings. - Richard.
Dear Love, An Animated Short
Fellow London artist Sarah Legault's animated film Dear Love is now available on her Etsy site. When I received mine, I found an actual book from the film enclosed in the DVD case! This film is visually beautiful as well as genuinely moving. I hope you'll check it out. - Richard.
Tale of Tales
Tale of Tales is a beautiful animated film by Yuri Norstein. This book by Clare Kitson is an in depth look at the making of the film, which examines many of the director's influences. The book is filled with fascinating background material, photographs and conceptual work. From Wikipedia: "Tale of Tales, like Tarkovsky's Mirror, attempts... Continue Reading →
